10 Tips to stay safe

Translated from the Spanish original. Read in Spanish

1.

Avoid connecting to open Wi-Fi networks. Criminals often “plant” Wi-Fi hotspots to spy on people, steal information, etc. And the worst part… it doesn’t take much know-how to do it.

2.

Don’t choose simple or easy-to-guess passwords. For example:
Combinations of relatives’ names, birthdays, pets’ names, personal interests, etc.
It doesn’t have to be a mathematical formula, but it should be complex enough that nobody can guess it, while still being easy to remember.

3.

Don’t reuse passwords. However strong your password is, if someone manages to get it from one of your accounts, they’d have access to your whole digital life.

4.

Don’t download apps from unknown places. If you need to download something, ALWAYS do it from the manufacturer’s website.

5.

DON’T leave your passwords on POST-ITs where everyone can see them, or share them with several people. Don’t send passwords over social networks, especially Skype.

6.

Don’t click links in emails. Be wary of emails that look unusual, even when they’re “sent” by people you know: requests for bank details, text in another language, unusual subjects — and above all, if those are the ones that contain links.

7.

NEVER, EVER plug a “lost” USB stick (found in the street or in a public place) into your computer.

8.

ALWAYS keep a backup of your most important information. Not just in case of hardware failure, but also to protect yourself from the “viruses” (properly called ransomware) that can lock all your data!!

9.

NEVER download “cracked” or “pirated” software.

10.

You can also improve your computer’s security with an extra program. Examples include Rapport or Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit.
